Installing CouchDB 0.11 on Debian Squeeze
A couple of days ago CouchDB 0.11.0 was released and since building the binaries can be a bit complicated at times I figured I could write down the quick way to success here :-)
I myself am using Debian and I took some notes during install, so here it is: instructions for CouchDB 0.11.0 on Debian Squeeze.

CouchDB 0.11.0 released with these new features
As I noted a couple of days ago CouchDB 0.11 was pretty close to a release - and today it happened :-) For the sake of completeness I post the set of features here:

CouchDB 0.11 around the corner
CouchDB 0.11 is just around the corner and the people at Couch.io keep providing updates (Part 1 and Part 2) on what your favourite Document Store will be shipping with its next release. To give you a quick primer, here the buzzwords:
- URL Rewriting: Have your own prettifyed URL schema on a CouchDB application
- Virtual Hosts: Place your site's entry-point anywhere in CouchDB's URL schema (plays nicely with URL rewriting!)
- Better JOIN-support: You can now fetch another document from your view result

E-Plus with HSDPA
You never know what a move can be good for! Last week we moved with our company's office and we didn't have internet connection for a while. So I used tethering from my HTC Touch Diamond for a couple of ours and who would have thought it: E-Plus finally offers HSDPA (at least downtown) in my city!. Let's hope they continue to expand that coverage :-)

Schroedinger
A couple of days ago we had a 10 years old cat moving in! His name is Schroedinger and he is obviously and objectively the very best cat in the world! Schroedinger likes sleeping a lot, being up early and fish-food!
I really love having Schroedinger around since he is even better than FocusBooster to ensure you adhere your breaks for The Pomodoro technique!

Concurrent execution of a dependency graph of threads
During the development phase of my diploma thesis I faced the probl^em of having a bunch of potentially concurrent operations where some dependencies had to be obeyed to finally evaluate to a valid XQuery. Basically this boils down to having a dependency graph and starting threads as they become ready (where the initial point of execution are jobs that don't have dependencies). Two minutes of (not so thorough) Google™ research made me wonder how I could be the only one on the planet to face this problem and soon I felt the itch to implement a suitable library...

TinyFiles Plugin for eclipse
Matt had the task to review a project he had never seen before - and found out most of the first didn't contain classes but interfaces... Not much to review there. He actually ended up looking at tons of files containing nothing but interface definitions - and so we had the idea of somehow displaying the 'weight' of a java source code file via an eclipse plugin. The result is called TinyFiles and can be installed into your eclipse using my eclipse update site at github.
Since 0.2 it even features two color themes ;-)
Have fun coding!

New posts on the crealytics Blog
Since I am now working for crealytics GmbH, a company that thankfully realizes and embraces the business value of blogs and social networks, I will post an article there every now and then! Be sure to check out my first ones:
- Google could solve the HTML5 video codec mess
- Filters in GXT Grid headers
- lombok, make this mess begone
There's more to come: the next article will dive quite deep into the recently-so-hip topic of NOSQL datastores... Stay tuned!

HDMI and analog audio out on XBOX 360
Ever wondered how to get decent audio from your stereo when using the HDMI cable of your XBOX 360 without spending €€€ for a premium cable? It's never been easier - the standard A/V cable has an empty plastic casing just to have you spend some more of your money... Simply remove the casing and plug in A/V and HDMI simultaneously... Beryl defect with Debian Etch?
Today I stumbled over a problem with Beryl on my brand new Debian Etch installation on my brand new notebook: After upgrading my system with the latest patches from the debian repository I was disappointed to see that starting beryl actually crashes the X.Org X-Server and thus forces a restart of the graphical user interface. It turns out that today's updates included a new version of a X.Org package which seems to break something in Beryl.
If someone else is experiencing these problems I'd be happy to know about that. I already filed a bug report at Beryl's project page and I hope to have some more info shortly.
For the sake of completeness here my configuration:
- Debian Etch
- GeForce 7300 Go
- Latest NVidia X.Org drivers
- Beryl 0.2.0

Passau-Wiki e.V. founded
The Passau-Wiki project exceeded my expectations - more and more people came to visit and a solid contributing user base gathered together. Since the site now reached a size that requires more organization and structure, voices came up asking for giving the project ownership to a larger group. These efforts finally led to the foundation of a non-profit association that now is in charge of running the site: the Passau-Wiki e.V.

City-Wiki for Passau online
Yesterday I started a city-wiki project for the German city Passau - it's still young and needs way more content, but I am confident it will catch on fast. Be sure to check it out!

Lizard Creations made official
Today I officially started my own company - and I shall call it "Lizard Creations". The reason behind this event is the increasing number of requests I got for creating websites, helping out with computer problems, consulting companies with their IT infrastructure - you name it: computer stuff. So from now on I officially am a freelancer in the following areas: Webdesign, IT Consulting, Software development.

New site design
Over 9 months since the last redesign (which did pretty well over that time) I decided to do it all over again! However, this time it payed off to separate layout and content, so it became a matter of minutes to integrate the content into the finished design...

"X Chess" screenshots
My little toy project - a chess game I am developing at the moment - just reached a state where it's time to show off a bit. The game works pretty well already so I decided to post a screenshot at flipcode.com.

Software Patents are evil
The EuroLinux Alliance started a petition which "is directed to the European Parliament. Its goal is to warn European Authorities against the dangers of software patents." A concerning example for the absudity and danger of such patents is described in the article 'BT claims ownership of hyperlinks' over at The Register.

QSpamDog enjoys publicity
QSpamDog seems to become more and more noticed by internet users - Google already reports more than 100 hits on the keyword 'qspamdog'. To put it over the top, the march '03 issue of India's first Linux magazine "Linux For You" mentioned QSpamDog in a article about installing QMail based servers in enterprise environment. Looks like it's finally time to put some new features into the spam filter to further enhance the usability of the utility for the internet community!

WebSite redesigned
It's not too obvious but for reasons of compatibility I abandoned the IFRAME style design and migrated to a full-page PHP base approach. I hope you like the new look and feel. I do as it gives me more freedom in how to design the webpage and the layout itself and especially the Opera users among you will notice the difference...
